Paper Alligator Craft

Continuing on with our letter "A" alphabet preschool unit, Little Monkey had lots of fun learning new facts about alligators - and we read some cute stories about them, too!  It happened to be right at the same time that General and Rose were studying the Nile River (and all of its wildlife, including...crocodiles!) for their Ancient Egypt history unit, which worked out nicely.  LM enjoyed learning right along with them :)

I found the idea for this cute paper alligator over at the Enchanted Learning website.  Here's what we did...

Little Monkey started by finger painting a few papers in green and blue ~ alligator colors :)  Construction paper would work great, too.

Next, we folded the paper in half, lengthwise:

I drew two legs and the body of an alligator on both sides of the paper.  (It would be faster to just draw the lines on one side of the paper, cutting both sides at the same time...but I thought it would be easier for LM this way.)  Also, I drew six slanted lines across the top of the folded edge (this time, just on one side), like this:

Here's the paper all opened up:

First Little Monkey cut across the fold (both sides of the paper) along the slanted lines...

...and then cut out the outline of the alligator...

Oops!  He accidentally cut one of the legs off altogether, lol!... But other than that, here is what the cut-out alligator looks like:

The slits can now be folded back to make little triangles...forming the "bumps" on an alligator's back...

Finally, we folded him in half again and added some googley-eyes, since we had them in the craft box,  along with a toothy grin...

...and a little tape to fix his leg :) ...

...and now we have a cute paper alligator to decorate our fridge!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! Things are pretty busy around our house, so I can't always leave as many replies as I would like to. But please know that I look forward to reading every note you send my way - they brighten my day! Blessings,Collette
